December of 2003,
Tolkien fans from around the world experienced a
wonderful event in Toronto, Canada, marking the premiere of the third
movie of
New Line Cinema's The Lord of the
Rings trilogy, The Return of
the King.
They gathered together to celebrate the movies, but what they found was
so much more: a sense of profound fellowship with everyone else in
attendance—scholars, artists, actors, and artisans alike.
The
Gathering
of the Fellowship was an experience like no other before it, and like
no
other since, according to many people. It was a wonderful three days in
the cold of December in Toronto, where families and
friends celebrated their love of the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. But more
than that, they found joy at doing it Together:

unique event is going to happen again, in 2006. Join us!
It may seem that the days of celebration are past, and that the
wonderful Age that we have shared together is over, never to return. It
may feel as if we ourselves are living at the end of the Third Age, in
the time of the Fading of the Eldar. But just as much was lost from
this world, indeed so much more was begun anew; and we will come
together to celebrate not only the passing of an Age, but the beginning
of a bright, wondrous future.
